The Simple Truth About the New Birth (13 of 15)
Series: What to Preach When You Don't Know What to Preach
Richard Bradley
2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
NKJV
J. Vernon Magee used to say, ''When you see the word therefore in the New Testament you need to look and see what it's there for.'' Usually this word is the beginning of a summary statement - a verse that wraps up some vital truth. What's the vital truth here? Clearly it's the death of Christ and all that His death accomplished for us.
Jesus' death on the cross brought about the possibility of our new birth. Apart from a new birth there is no hope of eternal life. When we stand before God someday we will not be able to stand before Him in our own righteousness because we have none. It's only through the new birth that we can assume the righteousness of Christ and that is the only thing the Father will accept.
The simple truth of the new birth is recorded in this single verse.
THE NEW BIRTH IS THE PRODUCT OF A SIMPLE DECISION
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Jesus died on the cross and shed His innocent blood on our behalf but that doesn't mean everyone is going to heaven. We must be in Christ to know we're saved and that heaven will be our eventual home. We can't just know that Jesus is the Savior - that's mere intellectual knowledge. We must have more than that. We must trust that He will keep His word to save us individually. This is called faith. Without this saving faith we cannot be in Christ and if we're not in Christ we cannot be saved.
Our simple decision to trust in Christ results in our new birth.
