There were many post resurrections encounters that happened before Christ ascended. He appeared to Mary Magdalene in that early morning encounter, He appeared to the Disciples later in the evening in the upper room, where he breathed the spirit of life, hope and peace upon them. He appeared to two Disciples on that afternoon on the Road of Emmaus. He appeared to Thomas seven days later to assure him that he was risen. He appeared to Disciples on the shore and had fish with them as a time of fellowship. And He appeared to over five hundred just prior to that ascension where he gave then that great commission. He says many different things over that forty-day period for those believers that either comforted them, confirmed them or commissioned them. That is one of the benefits of knowing the risen Savior, he comforts, He confirms, and He commissions us.

To Mary He calls her by name, what a word of comfort to her, the Lord call her be name. To Thomas, it was a word of confirmation, if you need to be real sure Thomas, place your hand in my wounded side, so you will know its me. To Peter, He says if you love me feed my sheep. To a group of Disciples, He breaks bread with them on the sea shore by sharing in a fish sandwich.

Jesus in his post resurrections presence speaks, either comfort, confirmation or commission. Christ rose from the dead that we night have His power, His presence and his purpose in our personal lives and if our faithful lives.

It is here in Acts 1:8 that Jesus commissions those faithful followers to be witnesses. Out of all the expectations that there can be, there can be no greater one that affirms the believer and the church than to be a witness. Out all that the church does, has done, and will do, our great task as a church is to be a witness for him.
