I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life (6 of 7)
Series: Who Do You Say that I Am?
Dave Gustavsen
John 14:1-10
There was a question that Jesus asked his disciples, and I think it's just as important today: Who do you say that I am? Sometimes, we find it more comfortable to talk about what other people say about Jesus: Well, the Muslims think Jesus was a prophet, but just one of many prophets; Orthodox Jews think Jesus was a good man, but not the Messiah; my Aunt Linda thought Jesus was her good luck charm when she went to Atlantic City. It's easy to talk about other people. Especially behind their backs. But ultimately we all have to take responsibility for our own lives. So the question is very personal: Who do you say that he is? And your answer really matters.
So the purpose of this series is to help us answer that question, by looking at the seven places in the Gospel of John where Jesus described himself beginning with the words ''I am.'' And today we come to the place where Jesus said, ''I am the way, the truth and the life.''
This is a really interesting passage of Scripture. Because, on the one hand, it contains some of the most comforting words that Jesus ever spoke. So comforting, that you often hear these words quoted at funerals. On the other hand, this passage contains some of the most challenging, offensive words that Jesus ever spoke. Right in the same passage! So, welcome to The Chapel on Mother's Day, where you will be comforted and offended! You ready? But seriously, passages like this are important. Because if we truly want to understand Jesus, we can't just pick the comforting stuff. And we have a tendency to do that-we like nice, gentle Jesus, and we avoid scary Jesus. But if we want to be honest, we have to look at all that he is, even the challenging parts.
So, let's look at the passage together. We're in John 14, verses 1 through 10...
