A Day to Remember- Memorial Day
Jim Perdue
Deuteronomy 8:1-20
Introduction/Attention
I have a terrible memory. I hate that I have a terrible memory, but it's true. At least I can remember how bad my memory is, right? This has really happened before; Stephanie will call me as I'm leaving the office and she'll ask me to pick up something from the store. I'll ride right by the store and forget it. I walk in the house empty-handed and she'll just smile at me. Where's the milk? She knows I didn't go to do it, I just really forgot. I will walk into a room and look around because I forgot why I came into the room. I know I went to get something, but I can't remember what it is. Then, I'll walk out of the room, go back downstairs and remember why I needed to go upstairs in the first place. Anybody else do that? I feel sorry for you if you ask me something on a Sunday or Wednesday. If people ask me to call them or let me know about an event, I request that they get in touch with me at the office because I will forget! That's why I carry around my iPhone; I call it my brain. It helps me remember! And I need it!*
I would say that everyone at some time or another has been forgetful. Even my wife, who has the best memory of anyone I know, forgets from time to time. Sometimes we ''forget to remember'' don't we!
The problem is, we don't just forget the little insignificant things, we forget the big important things as well. I'm not talking about your wedding anniversary, although you better not forget that! I'm talking about some significant spiritual things in our life.
This is Memorial Day weekend and Memorial Day is a Day to Remember. It's a day set aside to honor all Americans who have died in war while serving their country. This day reminds us to remember.
God has an important reminder as well. Deuteronomy 8 issues a clear challenge to remember the Lord. This challenge is so strong and clear that I want to take a moment to read the entire chapter. R ...
