We're taking four weeks to look at the ''one another'' commands of the New Testament. And today we come to maybe the hardest one: forgive one another. Let's look at today's passage-it's in Colossians 3, verses 12 to 14:

12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. This is God's Word.

I'm going to come back and draw from that passage a few times during the sermon. But first, let me ask you to do some self-reflection. When you look at your own life, how do you respond when you've been mistreated? When someone trashes your reputation behind your back? When your neighbor blasts music till 3AM when you have to get up for work at 6:00 the next morning? When that bully picks on your son at school, and he comes home crying and says he doesn't want to go back the next day? Fill in the blank in your own life-because we've all been wronged, haven't we? How do you handle that?

I think all of us have a sense that forgiveness is a good thing, and when it happens, it's amazing. My mind goes back to the church shooting that happened in Charleston, South Carolina back in 2015-nine people shot at a prayer meeting. One of the victims was named Ethel Lance. And in a courtroom shortly after the shooting, here's what Ethel Lance's daughter said to the killer, Dylan Roof: ''I forgive you. You took something very precious away from me. I will never get to talk to her ever again. I will never be able to hold her again, but I forgive you, and have mercy on your soul. ... You hurt me. You hurt a lot of people. If God forgives you, I forgive you.'' That is breathtaking. As all true ...
