Introduction

As we conclude our four-week mini-series, this morning, on the local church, we arrive at the very practical question of who, then, should lead the church. Now, really, you could say that we've been talking about the local church since back in March when we took three weeks to examine what the ordinance of the Lord's Supper is. You see, in exploring what the Bible says about this gift to the local church we spent a lot of time exploring just what the local church is and should be. However, we've sought here in the month of April to get more specific to the matter. On April 8 our elders fleshed this out on a broad scale, showing how the New Testament describes the church as a family and what this means then for FBC. On April 15 we looked at the end of 1 Timothy 3 and beginning of 1 Timothy 4 to see how the purpose of our family is the proclamation and defense of the Gospel. Last week, we saw in Acts 20 that in order for our family here to live up to this purpose, God has called each local family to be shepherded by elders or overseers. This morning, thus, we ask then who should serve in this role.

We return, therefore, to 1 Timothy 3 where Paul shows us the absolute necessity of having proper leadership in order to accomplish the calling given to the local church. In other words, without proper leadership in the local church the Word of God can be corrupted and the gospel lost; without proper leadership in the local church the mission of God can be corrupted and lost; without proper leadership in the local church proper conduct before God can be corrupted and lost. In other words, God has established His household to be led.
