The Rewards of Giving
Jerry Watts
Luke 6:38

How many of you have ever eaten a ''Mrs. Fields' Original Cookie''? The story is told about Debbi Fields opened her store selling these delicious cookies only to have no customers. One day she got an idea. She loaded her plate with those delicious cookies and went out onto the sidewalk GIVING THEM AWAY. What followed was a steady supply of customer purchasing her cookies. Thus, in the opening moments of this message, we witness proof of the scriptural truth which we reflect on and take up today.

Turn with me to Luke 6. If you are wondering, our Pastor asked me specifically to continue our 'journey of faith.' A pastor friend of mine says that God has given us 3 ways to invest in eternity. Two of them are open for discussion - any time and any place, but the 3rd one is 'off limits' and 'nobody's business.' The first is ''Time.'' Such a precious commodity because we only get ONE shot at it, you can only spend it once, and so we love to hear talks about how to best use our time. The second on is ''Talents''. We all have skills or abilities which seem to come easy to us and we like to hear messages about how to employ our talents. We are never offended at someone talking with us about these TWO (Time and Talents), but the third one is taboo, a no-no, and out of bound. You let the preacher start preaching on our ''TREASURES'' and there will be one who says, ''All the preacher every preaches on is money''. As a pastor, I preached on money once every year or two (probably wrong since Jesus had so much to say on the subject). That attitude may say more about the person's attendance record than it does the preacher's topics.

Our message today is on ''The rewards of giving.'' I love talking about rewards. When I was a younger man, I was privileged to win several golf tournaments (no longer) and I loved the rewards. It wasn't about the trophies, golf balls, or the like, I just loved whatever it was.

Let's be honest, ...
