For the past several weeks I have been reading a book entitled, ''The Great Evangelical Recession'' and have been thinking about, meditating on, and pondering the 'what' of ''what is happening'' to and in the American church. Here are the proven truths; Despite the fact that the 21st century evangelical church is richer (in the terms of the world) than at any time in history, she is making little change to the culture and is declining at approximately 10% each year.

This brings out 3 difficult questions; 1) How many years can anything continue to lose 10% per year and survive? And 2) What happens to the culture if the local church is non-existent? And more importantly, 3) What's going on (or not) to cause this? My own personal question about this is highly personal: What happens to my Kids (later in life), grandkids, and great grandkids if the influence and impact of Jesus' local church is gone? I know that the church of the Lord Jesus will survive until the 2nd coming but look at Europe today. Once a bastion of the gospel, today is one of the most paganist society on earth. The local churches are all but gone. They abandoned the gospel and true ''Christianity'' and Jesus, good to His word, removed their lampstand.

While there are many different things at play in this, I want to offer us a personal possibility.

Please think with me for our time this morning on the subject of 'far.' You recognize the word and know what it means. If you have a family member that moves to Alaska, then they are 'far from you.' This concept is more pronounced in your life if you have kids that move away or especially grandkids. They are 'far away.'

We also use this term when giving details. One might say, ''That is far from the truth'' which means is an untruth or to use a Bible word, a lie. Being far from the truth is not our desire.
