HOW TO RELEASE REGRETS
Sunday morning, March 10, 1991
I. Regret is a robber. The past robs your future.
"IF ONLY ..."
WHEN YOU CUT YOURSELF YOU BLEED. WHEN YOU STEP ACROSS GOD'S LAW
AND YOUR CONVICTIONS YOU WILL BE GUILTY.
CAN YOU BURY THE PAST? IT COMES BACK AT THE MOST INOPPORTUNE
TIME. YOU CAN NUTRALIZE ITS STING!
DEAL WITH GUILT?
1. WE TRY TO BURY THEM
MINIMISE THEIR IMPORTANCE, RATIONALIZE, COMPROMISE
2. WE TRY TO BLAME OTHERS
I. Jesus released people from their regrets.
3. WE BEAT OURSELVES. CONDEMN OURSELVES.
PSA 38:4 My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to
bear.
PSA 38:6 I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I
go about mourning.
PSA 38:8 I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of
heart.
PSA 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light
has gone from my eyes.
INSTINCTIVELY WE TRY TO PAY FOR THEM BY ABUSING OURSELVES.
MAKE YOURSELF SICK, DEPRESSION, I DESERVE THIS! SET OURSELVES UP
FOR FAILURE. "I DON'T DESERVE TO SUCCEED."
PEOPLE FEEL CONDEMNED! YOUR CONSCIENCE NEVER KNOWS WHEN TO QUIT?
1. ADMIT YOUR GUILT. PSA 51:3, PSA 32:5
THE MOST PAINFUL STEP.
CONFESS, SAY THE SAME THING THAT GOD SAYS ABOUT YOURSELF.
NOT BARGAN.
IF YOU'LL GET ME OUT OF THIS I'LL....DO WE THINK THAT GOD WILL
BE MOVED BY OUR BARGANING?
2. ACCEPT GOD'S FORGIVENESS.
NO CONDEMNATION. ETCH A SKETCH. JUSTIFIED BY HIS SUBSTITUTION.
FREE IN CHRIST.
