Forgiveness is defined as: to set someone free from the consequences of their actions which hurt or injured you.

Forgiveness - Heb. to pardon instead of punish. Exodus 34:9 Moses asked God, ''pardon our sin and iniquity.''

How do you illustrate the theological concept of forgiveness? Jesus told parables such as the story of the prodigal son. In the OT God gave the people an illustration of their sins being completely forgiven with two goats.

Background

The Day of Atonement, called Yom Kippur, was the most holy day of the year for the Jews; because on that day the sins of the nation were forgiven for the past year. It took place on the tenth day of the seventh month of the Jewish year which is in late September or early October according to our calendar.

It was the one day of the year in which the high priest went into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled blood on the front of the mercy seat with his finger seven times showing the sins of the people were completely forgiven (:14).

The Hebrew word for mercy seat is atonement cover was the lid over the box with the two cherubim where the glory of God dwelt. John Wycliffe, who was the first one to translate the Bible into the English language in 1382, chose to translate the word cover as mercy seat because it was where they received God's mercy
for our sins instead of judgment.

Aaron, the high priest, was to take two male goats from those which had been set aside to be sacrificed and bring them before the tabernacle, together they were viewed as one sacrifice.

:8 According to Jewish tradition the high priest would go into the tabernacle with the deputy priest on his right and the head elder on his left. They would walk past the altar where there was a box in which were two stones or pieces of wood that were identical. On one was written ''for Yahweh'' and the other ''for Azazel.''
