To Tell the Truth (11 of 13)
Series: Integrity of Joseph
Stephen Whitney
Genesis 44:1-23

We live in an age when people will lie to your face without feeling any guilt. We see it in politics where a person will tell you what they think you want to hear instead of the truth. And even when they are caught in a lie they will not acknowledge it; but continue to tell a lie hoping you will eventually believe it.

Kent Hughes in Disciplines of a Godly Man wrote,?''Integrity demands that all speech be intentionally true. A man of integrity never cheats or defrauds another, never steals.''

Proverbs 10:9 Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.

Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright guides them. They do what is right because they want to honor God.

Background Joseph didn't trust his brothers because they had sold him as a slave some 20 years ago. He had tested their character by returning their money to them the first time they came to buy
grain (42:27).

He had requested they bring their younger brother Benjamin with them the next time they came to buy grain (42:34).

He still does not completely trust them, so he will test them again. They have never admitted they were guilty of their sin against him.

INTEGRITY TESTED :1-5

Joseph shows his brother's more kindness by giving them as much food as they could carry and returning all of their money as well.

His kindness toward them would be a be a reminder that God was involved in their lives and providing for their needs. Genesis 43:23 The steward had told them, ''Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you.''

:2 Silver cup - was probably on Joseph's table when they ate lunch at his house with him (43:32). His strategy was to cause his brothers anxiety and distress to see if they would be honest.

John Calvin - ''Joseph commands the cup to be enclosed in Benjamin's sack, in order that he might claim him as his own, when convicted of the theft.''
