Joshua 2
INTRO: Take your Bibles now this morning and be finding your place at Joshua chapter 2 as we continue in our series of studies through this amazing, challenging and inspiring Old Testament book that we've entitled, ''Victorious: Strong, Courageous Faith.''
ILLUS: There's something about women and ribbons - Laura Kate at the wedding taking out the ribbon from the wedding service order.
In Joshua, chapter 2, we are introduced to a shady lady by the name of Rahab. She's a prostitute who lived in a pagan city called Jericho.
For you history buffs, Jericho is the oldest city in all of the world. There's no other city that was built before Jericho.
For you geography buffs, it's the lowest city in all of the world. It sits right at the top of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the planet.
So what we have here in Joshua chapter 2 is a pagan prostitute living in the oldest and lowest city on the face of the fallen world.
There's a picture of sin and its effects if there ever was one.
She was a pagan living in spiritual darkness.
She was a prostitute living in spiritual depravity.
She was a person facing sudden destruction.
And yet she experienced both physical, as well as spiritual, salvation because of the fact that she found grace through faith.
ILLUS: Dr. Warren Wiersbe says that ''Rahab's conversion was truly an act of God's grace. Like all the citizens of Canaan, Rahab was under condemnation and destined to die. God commanded the Jews to 'utterly destroy them and show them no mercy (Deut. 7:1-3). Rahab was a Gentile, outside the covenant mercies shown to Israel (Ephesians 2:11-13). She didn't deserve to be saved, but God had mercy on her. If ever a sinner experienced Ephesians 2:1-10, it was Rahab.''
Rahab is one of the greatest pictures of what salvation can do in the life of a person in all of the Old Testament.
