Introduction: Jesus and the Religious Leaders The context of this passage revolves around Jesus taking on a barrage of questions from the religious leaders; Pharisees, Scribes, Sadducees. They are asking him questions from paying taxes to the resurrection. But why? Why are they always giving Jesus a hard time?

Think about the situation for a minute. Jesus has come on the religious scene. He is just a poor carpenter from Nazareth, a small insignificant town, and he is really an unknown person. But Jesus begins to make some huge claims about God and the Scriptures. And if that's not enough Jesus starts physically healing people, forgiving people's sins, calling himself a prophet and Lord. And then the icing on the cake Jesus calls himself the Messiah, the Christ whom the Old Testament said would come and save his people from their sins. Hundreds and thousands of people start following Jesus and believing in Him.

It makes sense that the religious leaders are concerned with who he really is. Is he really God in the flesh or just a fake?

As a pastor (a religious leader of our day), I would certainly call into question anyone who was doing the things that Jesus was doing. Hey, I don't believe that Benny Hinn can physically heal people, I think he's a joke and a fake. And if a guy just showed up and claimed to be the Messiah, I would have some serious doubts. I would want to ask him some pretty tough questions and find out if he knows his Bible or not.

So, these religious leaders are doing their due diligence. But Jesus, because He actually was who He said He was, begins to give truthful answers, answers that are word for word Biblical.

One guy finally steps forward and asks Jesus the key question. I guess he figures that if Jesus gets this question wrong, then we know for sure he's a fake. But of course, Jesus does not get it wrong, he nails it. Jesus knows his Bible better than any of t ...
