Praying for God's People (8)
Series: Ephesians
Robert Dawson
Ephesians 3:14-21
John Stott said the best way to determine a Christian's ambitions, desires and fears is to look at the content of their prayers. It gives insight to the soul. What we pray for ourselves and others reveals what we believe is important and necessary for a healthy, whole and productive life and ministry.
Today, we read the second of Paul's prayers for the church in Ephesus and are invited behind the scenes of Paul's prayer life. He opens his prayer journal and says, ''Here, read.'' As we see Paul's heart in print, we unearth those things he believes to be necessary and important in the life of a believer and church.
Ephesians 3.14-21 - For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. 20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
In the last part of chapter two and the first part of this chapter, Paul reminds us that God has chosen for Himself a people from every nation and race to be a third race, a redeemed people, one defined by our common faith and salvation in Jesus Christ and not our cultural backgrounds, he tells us...
- The church, this new people, 'is central to God's plan.'
- The church is to display the wisdom of God and reflect the glory of God to our communities ...
