I heard of a family tradition the other day - for birthdays, the family skips the song - yes that one - and just sings 'yoooouuuuuuu' and then blow out the candles! - Gets to the point! Saves the embracing singer too!

''Whenever anyone of us has to take an exam they take a single uncooked potato with them. This has been tradition ever since my grampa found one in his pocket after acing his driving test. We're not a particularly superstitious family otherwise, but The Potato has proven itself indispensable.''

Sometimes we have traditions that are understandable and make sense. Other times, not so much. For my own family, extended family, at Christmas we have a rubber chicken that gets passed around between about 60-70 people now, it's a kind of badge of honor to get the chicken. No idea when/why it started, but it's what we do...

Paul, in the passage that we are going to be reading here in a moment alludes to tradition when it comes to the church. There are good traditions, and there are some bad one's. Where do traditions fall for the church? Well, some good one's, some not so good! I think at the end of today, we will find a word that we can take with us!

Picking up where we left off last week, Paul had just finished by proclaiming Christ as the 'mystery' of God, now revealed to all. If you remember, Paul was focused on the aspect of unity, of the reality that we are best able to experience Christ in the context of community, not in isolation. It's here that we find the hidden treasures of God in Christ...
