Colossians 3:12-17
Colossians 3:12-17 (CSB) 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. 14 Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
15 And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. ?For this week, I want to focus in particular on the tail end of this passage.
What kind of people are we to be? This is actually a really good question. It assumes a couple of things.
We have a choice.There is a correct answer.
In a world that celebrates tolerance which is in reality only one way, and typically against the proclamation of faith, answering the above question is key to our lives in our society.
What kind of people are we to be?
(1) The answer is locked in the relationships of the body of Christ
Peace is mentioned first. For there to be peace, there needs to be at least two perspectives or directions. Paul is dealing with the reality that Christ has broken down the walls of division among his people, and among all of creation - think back to the verses from previous weeks -
“reconcile to himself all things, by making peace, through his blood shed on the cross.” (1:20)
and last week - “there is no Jew and gentile, barbarian, scythian, free or slave…” but we are to be at peace!
