Victory! (4 of 4)
Series: The Message of the Cross
William Wyne
John 19:30
A painter once painted the devil playing a game of chess with a young man whose eternal soul was at stake. The scene showed the devil with a look of glee on his face, as he checkmates the young man whose look of despair acknowledges defeat. There appears no other move for him to make, he is defeated, he is at the dead end, its over and the devil appears to be the winner. A great chess player came across the work of art and, after carefully studying the board, he set up a chess board with the pieces in the same position. After much thought and time, he saw defeat could be turned into victory, and he saw that there was one move that the young man had that would save him in that game. By making this certain move on the young man's behalf, the devil was placed in a position of defeat.
The enemies of Christ, the predictions had made its move on Christ. They had nailed him to the cross, and the disciples had all fled away, he had been tried and made a mockery in the courts. The enemy was winning, and it appears that it was over. But the enemy lifted up that cross. And remember Jesus words in John 12:32, And, if I, be lifted up from the cross, I will draw all men to me.
There is no doubt that the Good Friday that we remember was a bad Friday, but it became a Good Friday because the Christ of the cross did not lose the battle, he won. He turned what was supposed to have been a defeat into a victory. He turned what was an obvious negative into a plus sign. He turned the very thing that was designed to destroy the movement into the very thing that strengthens the movement.
The scriptures say thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
