Day 239 August 27 - Jeremiah 51 and 52
In chapter 51 we read about the coming destruction of Babylon and in chapter 52 we see the fulfillment of that prophecy. Let us not overlook that Babylon was the first great world leader. In their day they had no opposition and the very idea of them being overthrown was beyond comprehension. We can read of this overthrowing of Babylon in Daniel chapter5. The king was feasting and drinking within the security of his palace as Gobryas, the Median general was besieging the city without. King Belshazzar was smug within the walls of his wondrous city but the enemy was without devising a plan to unseat him.
Point to Ponder
The walls around the city of Babylon were fifteen miles square made of brick. The walls were three hundred feet high and wide enough for four chariots of horses to walk side beside upon the tops of the walls. The king had stored enough grain and water within the walls to sustain them for years. The king had detoured a channel of water from the river Euphrates that flowed through a canal right through the city. The king and his vast contingency were feasting and drinking inside the city but the water was about to be diverted on the outside of the walls and the enemy will sneak right into the city. We find that Gobryas had diverted the canal of water that flowed within the walls of the city. The soldiers within had no idea of what had taken place and the enemy were walking the streets within moments and Babylon was overthrown.
