1 Corinthians 14:1-19
Have you ever been to an auto-mechanic for what you thought was a minor issue or repair only to walk out with a list of things that were wrong once they looked under the hood? Or, maybe you started a simple remodel at the house only to discover the more you tore out the more complicated and expensive the job got?
That's how I feel studying 1 Corinthians. Paul had his hands full. I'm certain this church drastically increased his prayer life as well as his blood-pressure. Not that we've lifted the hood on this church, the confusion, chaos and abuses continue to mount. Paul is not dealing with minor repairs but a complete rebuild. Their arrogance, selfishness and immaturity had gummed up the inner-workings of the church and caused its ministry to stall. Corinth's ability to demonstrate and declare the message of salvation was greatly hampered.
In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul addresses the issue of tainted tongues, one more aspect of ministry and church life they had distorted and created division with. We will deal with most of the verses in this chapter as we work our way though this message. But it will be a more broad-brush approach to the subject than a complete exegesis of this passage. We will touch on some of the broader parts of the picture surrounding tongues.
What I found in my study was how diverse the map is on this issue even among those who are not of the charismatic or Pentecostal persuasion. (While it will become evident that I have some disagreements, strong ones, with those who are part of the charismatic movement this is not a diatribe or attack on them. Also, a word of caution. Let's be careful not to lump all churches with charismatic or Pentecostal leanings or tendencies with the shysters and charlatan faith healers who promulgate a heretical gospel, one we call a prosperity Gospel).
For me, in trying to wrap my head around this chapter and debate ...
