1.0 What is Forgiveness?

Fact: Academic interest in person-to-person forgiveness is relatively new. Research findings by academic institutions like Stanford University now exists on such related topics like: 1) Forgiveness and Conflict Resolution in Marriage; 2) Forgiveness Education with Children in Areas of Poverty and Violence; 3) Forgiveness-Seeking Behavior and Motives; and, 4) Promoting Reconciliation and Forgiveness After Mass Violence.

1.1 Forgiveness means to let go; to set free; to release.

A) Forgiveness is a gift of God TO you.

B) Forgiveness is a gift FOR you...give it to yourself.

C) Forgiveness is a process (or the result of a process) that involves a change in emotion and attitude regarding an offender.

1.2 Forgiveness is the application of God's medicine to the pain within your soul.

A) Forgiveness acknowledges your PAIN.

B) Jesus used a rabbinic hyperbole to bring out the importance of practicing FORGIVENESS and not living in pain.

1.3 What forgiveness is NOT.

A) Forgiveness does not mean reconciliation, which is when the offended person seizes an opportunity for reunion.

B) Forgiveness does not mean justice or its elimination. If forgiveness is whitewashing a wrong, then it is itself a wrong.

C) Forgiveness does not mean the elimination of healthy boundaries.

D) Forgiveness does not mean you ignore the feelings of anger, resentment, fear, disgust, or other anger-related emotions.

1.4 Forgiveness is needed in every area of life.

B) Business and Professional
C) Society and Community
D) Person-to-Person
