The Prayer of Jabez
David Ireland
1 Chronicles 4:9-10
1.0 Prayer is a Weapon (1 Chron. 4:9-10)! [P. 286]
1.1 Background and setting of the text:
A) This man lived in southern Israel during the time of the Judges in the tribe of Judah.
B) His brief prayer changed the course of his life.
John Bunyan-the author of Pilgrim's Promise, writes: ''Prayer is a sincere, sensible, affectionate pouring out of the heart or soul to God, through Christ, in the strength and assistance of the Holy Spirit.'' [Prayer, P. 13]

The Weapon of Prayer [P. 22]
B) We have defensive and offensive weapons.
1. Defensive weapons guard and protect us from attacks.
Eph. 6:11-''Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.''

1 Peter 5:8-9-''Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.''
2. Offensive weapons help us to advance and make progress.
2.0 Jabez Went on the Offense (1 Chron. 4:9-10).
2.1 ''Oh, that You would BLESS me.''
A) The name ''Jabez'' means ''pain.'' A literal rendering could be: ''He causes (or will cause) pain.'' In Hebrew culture, one's name helped define yo ...
