1.0 Experiencing Culture and Change (Acts 11:19-26)?
1.1 What is the text describing?
A) The persecution that arose in Jerusalem caused Christians to scatter for safety and stability (11:19).
B) They ran as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch-all cross-cultural cities (11:19).
C) The persecuted saints found themselves sharing their faith with those whom they felt culturally comfortable (11:19b and 20).
1.2 What did Barnabas see as he visited Antioch?
A) A diverse group of people sharing a common experience.
1. They had been called out of darkness into light.
2. They had been called out of disobedience into obedience.
3. Each ethnic group's faith has been shaped by past experiences-good and bad; painful and joyous.
4. Ongoing pains, frustrations and paradoxes exist within each culture. This often shapes their perspective, behavior, and preferences.
B) A diverse group of people sharing a common message.
1. Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world and through Him we can have new life.
2. Jesus Christ sets people free.
3. Theology of ''the whole-the general-the universal church should be the beliefs of the church and not that which is partial or parochial. Ignatius of Antioch taught that his doctrines were ''universal''; they are according to the whole-not partial; plural perspectives must be allowed.
