Have You Killed Your Father's Bull? (2 of 3)
Series: 40 Day Journey
David Ireland
Jude 6: 12
1.0 Idols Must Be Destroyed (Jud. 6:12, 25-32)! P. 174
1.1 What is the text describing?
A) Oppression arose against Israel by the Midianites because of their longstanding disobedience to God's laws.
B) Gideon is being called out from the group to become someone NEW and to do something NEW-to be a deliverer...a judge.
C) Obedience to God requires action-the killing of his father's BULL (v. 25).
1.2 God calls us to do something NEW and to be someone DIFFERENT than our forefathers.
A) Idols stand in the way, however.
1. Idols signify more than statues that people bow to worship. Idols can also represent ideas and beliefs to which people render obedience and devotion.
Col. 3:5-''You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greediness is a form of idol worship). Today's English Version.
2. Modern-day idols are usually those of the HEART and MIND such as money, materialism, thinking that supports racial or cultural superiority, etc.
Note: If I build a church with a stained glass window of a Black Jesus, is that a biblical model? ''Yes'' and ''No.'' Yes, Jesus is the Savior for the Black race. But in another sense, the answer is ''no,'' because an appropriate model of Christ is to have a Caucasian Jesus, an Asian Jesus, an Hispanic Jesus, an Indian Jesus, etc. Then you made need a tall Jesus, etc.
B) Idols must be KILLED because:
1. They affect our thinking, feelings, perspective, and behavior.
2. They affect our expectations of the future, toward God, and toward others.
2.0 How Do People Make Their Race/Culture an Idol (Phil. 3:4-8)? P. 832
2.1 They make their race and culture their brand-their identifier; hence, an idol.
A) Prior to Christ, Paul took pride in his heritage, in that he was circumcised on the eight day of the people of Israel.
