1.0 The Church is a Family (Gal. 2:11-16)! P. 824
1.1 Relational problems stemmed from:
A) Peter's PLATFORM.
1. He was a high profile leader.
2. He influenced others-leaders and members of the rank-and-file.
3. All leaders have blind spots and areas that require growth and spiritual formation, including Peter.
B) Peter's PERSPECTIVE.
1. He thought his cultural history is right and provided an accurate perspective of social life.
2. He was afraid of what others-his people-thought of his actions.
3. His theology was limited and unclear to him but he did not know it.
Theology of ''the whole-the general-the universal church should be the beliefs of the church and not that which is partial or parochial. Ignatius of Antioch taught that his doctrines were ''universal''; they are according to the whole-not partial; plural perspectives must be allowed.
C) Peter's PRACTICE.
1. His practice showcased his preference.
2. His social preference fell short of biblical principles.
Luke 10:27-''Love your neighbor as yourself.''
3. His practice toward diversity did not totally change even when confronted by the Holy Spirit in earlier days.
Acts 10:15-The Holy Spirit said: ''Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.''
4. He had not had a lot of cross-cultural experiences that helped him overcome social awkwardness when in racially and culturally diverse settings.
DO YOU SEE IT?
1.2 Good solutions require good strategy.
A) The problem was public so the solution had to be public.
B) The church's vision must be safeguarded and protected if it's going to survive and thrive.
C) Address the source of the problem; don't attack the person.
