Building a Cross-Cultural Church (4 of 4)
David Ireland
Acts 11: 19-26
What is the Church?
Story: The local church represents the universal church...Theology of ''the whole-the general-the universal church should be the beliefs of the church and not that which is partial or parochial. Ignatius of Antioch taught that his doctrines were ''universal''; they are according to the whole-not partial; plural perspectives must be allowed. Antioch-an ethnically diverse community
The church is a house of prayer for all nations (Mk. 11:17) The church was always intended to be ethnically diverse. It should never operate based on PRECONVERTED preferences. The church is to REPRESENT the community-its diversity-in such a way that people's needs are met. The church is to represent the world-all nations-and God's HEART for the world must be communicated.
Building a Multiethnic Church (Acts 13:1-2)
Note: Three Building Blocks to consider...
Lesson #1: There's a need to discover one another Each ethnic group's faith has been shaped by:
Past experiences-good and bad; painful and joyous Ongoing pains, frustrations and paradoxes
Future possibilities of their faith and of the church (cite NY Times stats)
Lesson #2: Models are important What do you see? (i.e., leaders, pictures, images, etc.)
Who cares for my soul? Who understands me? A philosophy of ministry which welcomes cross-cultural ministry should be outlined, addressed directly and as an ongoing effort of the ministry.
Lesson #3: Cross-Cultural Worship What is worship? Have you planned for me? Inclusive vs. Exclusive Use family time and watching television as an example of inclusion. Story: Move the Fence-Love is Inclusive!
Transgenerational worship
