Managing Life's Disappointments
David Ireland
Genesis 39:1
1.0 Joseph Faced A Number of Major Life's Disappointments (Gen. 39:1).
1.1 What would you say if you were called to speak to:
A) Ray and Janay Rice after their scandal?
B) The family of Michael Brown-the unarmed Black teenager who was shot by police officer, Darren Wilson?
C) Darren Wilson-the white officer who shot Michael Brown?
D) How would you encourage Nina Pham and Amber Vinson-the two Texas nurses who contracted
Ebola while attending to the recently deceased, Thomas Eric Duncan?
1.2 I would tell them these FOUR statements that I'm going to tell you today. They will help you manage life's disappointments.
A) I'm here by God's appointment.
B) I'm here in His keeping;
C) I'm here under His training; and,
D) I'm here for His time.
2.0 How Can I Manage My Pain?
2.1 #1: I'm Here by God's Appointment.
Note: How did I get here? There are two answers-the natural and the spiritual. (Gen. 39:1-2)
A) Naturally speaking, my wicked brothers are to blame.
B) Spiritually speaking, God has a plan which I don't fully understand right now. But, I will learn to say:
I'm Here by God's Appointment!
C) The statement helps him deal with the pain.
1. Joseph is in Egypt. He's been sold as a slave for the second time.
2. He was the 11th son of the Jewish patriarch Jacob-Abraham's grandson.
3. Joseph's brothers put him into a pit to die, but changed their mind and sold him instead for 20 pieces of silver to merchants headed for Egypt.
D) He must use the light of this statement to survive: I'm Here by God's Appointment.
1. God is still in charge of everything.
2. Trust God despite what man has done ''to you''.
3. Rely on God's sovereignty and not on your power or powerlessness.
Prov. 3:5-6-''Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.''
