1.0 This is Us (Prov. 24:1-4)!
Proverbs 24:1-4-''Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company; for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble. By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; and by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.''
1.1 The American family is complicated which leads to ongoing struggles.
A) In 1960 73% of children lived with two parents first marriage households.
B) In 2014, 46% of children live in two-parent first marriage households; 15% of children in two parents in remarriage; 7% with cohabitating parents; 26% with single parents and 5% with no parents.
C) Our broken culture is creating and normalizing new family patterns.
1.2 The family is grappling with issues that are pretty complex and thorny.
A) Depression and sickness.
B) Dysfunctional family of origin-children that came from divorced parents are prone to divorcing 4 times higher than kids who came from an intact family.
C) The allure of social media and other external sources within our broken culture are a threat to the family.
D) Amidst all of this the Bible provides us with a hope-filled perspective and a roadmap that leads to achieving a healthy family.
2.0 Tripod for Building an Emotionally Healthy Family.
2.1 Commitment!
A) Be committed to making commitments. This brings security and freedom. It means you're all in. It's countercultural!
B) There are three types of commitment.
1. Freeloaders. This is a person who lives in a family without doing anything to maintain or improve the family unless he or she feels like it.
2. Renters. This is a person who is willing to improve their ability to care for the family as long as it is in their best interest to do so.
i. Their contribution in the family is transactional. You do for me and I'll do for you.
