Philippians 1:3-8

Last week we started a new sermon series going through the book of Philippians. I confessed in that opening message that over the last year I have allowed difficult people, demanding pressures, and disappointing circumstances to put a serious leak in my joy. I've struggled to have and maintain a spirit of joy. There is no one to blame except me because it's no one's fault but my own. Part of confession is ownership. You can't truly confess something until you personally own it. A joy leak is a problem for me and any believer because Nehemiah 8:10 says: 'The joy of the Lord is our strength'.

Joy is the supernatural spiritual strength provided through the presence of the Holy Spirit to thrive in the trials of life with fervor, delight, and perseverance. It's the outward evidence to a watching world that the Spirit of the living God loves us, lives in us, and is working through us.

We defined joy last week as:

Joy isn't just something that happens to us without our involvement or participation. It is the byproduct of being a person who passionately loves Christ, closely walks with the Lord, and humbly obeys His Word. Joy flourishes in the life of every believer who consistently cooperates with Christ. What does it look like? How do we do that?
