I wonder sometimes if the words 'bless' and 'be with' were stricken from the English language if some Christians would have any idea how to pray.

''God bless mom and be with dad.''

''God, bless the U.S. and be with our leaders.''

''God, bless our church and be with our missionaries.''

Have you ever gotten stuck in the vague and vanilla 'bless and be with' kind of praying? If 'bless and be with' were taken out of your vocabulary would you struggle with to know what to pray?

There is no greater indicator of a person's spiritual maturity than their prayer life. A cold heart cannot produce fervent prayer. It's been my experience that when the topic of prayer comes up, most Christians feel extremely inept and are constantly trying to learn and grow in that area of their life. Fortunately for us, that's exactly what the Apostle Paul is teaching us today in Philippians 1:9-11. So, if you have a bible, I invite you to open it to Philippians 1 and follow along.

Last week we looked at verse 4 in depth, as Paul tenderly and lovingly tells the church in Philippi that as he sits in prison chained to a Roman soldier he is praying for them. Prayer transported him from where he was to where he wanted to be. V4: ''...always in every prayer of mine making requests for you with all joy.''. In that one short verse, Paul describes HOW he is praying for his beloved church family. He was praying...

CONSTANTLY for them. 'always'

HABITUALLY for them. 'every prayer'

SPECIFICALLY for them. 'making request'

ENTHUSIASTICALLY for them. 'all with joy'

Paul wants these people that he loves to be encouraged by knowing HOW he was praying for them. But in V9-11, Paul takes it one step further and tells them WHAT he's praying for them. He goes from the condition of his prayers to the content of his prayers. I'm sure this isn't every single thing he prayed for ...
