Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was born January 17, 1942, just a few miles up the road in Louisville, KY. He began training as a amateur boxer at the age of 12, and at age 18, he won a gold medal in the Light-Heavyweight division at the 1960 Olympic games in Rome.

Later that year Clay turned professional, and within 4 years, at age 22, he won the WBA, WBC, and lineal heavyweight titles from Sonny Liston.
