It was one of those nights, we all have, when sleep was a rare commodity. Instead of dreaming of a wish, I was wishing I could dream. My stomach was hit with that queasy, nauseating, and upsetting disturbance, and I was looking for relief.

After flushing down a cracker with a gulp of 7-UP, I made my way to the medicine cabinet where my eyes laid hold of the unmistakable, penetrating pink colored bottle known as Pepto-Bismol.

As I reached for the bottle, preparing to hit my stomach with a weapon of mass destruction, something arrested my attention. I am quite sure it is something that I had seen, and read before, but for some reason, that night, it caused me to pause and give heed to its instruction. It was the little 4-word admonition, found on a variety of products: ''SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING!''
According to a 2008 report from the Food and Drug Administration, depending on the product, those words must appear in connection with the dosage directions. The reason for those instructions is due to the ingredients contained in the product. Because many of those ingredients will ''emulsify,'' or separate from each other, shaking well before use is of the utmost importance.

It doesn't take long on the pilgrimage of the redeemed to discover that often God must shake us well before using. Some of God's choicest saints were those who found themselves shaken to be shaped, broken to be blessed, and disturbed to be developed.

C. H. Spurgeon said, ''It is no mean thing to be chosen of God. God's choicest make choice men. We are chosen, not in the palace, but in the furnace.''
