Ezra 1- Nehemiah 9
Day 141 May 21 - Ezra 1, 2, and 3
Ezra, a priest; is the author of this ''post captivity'' book but we will not see him until we read of him in chapter seven. He was a priest but he had not been allowed to do his priestly duties during the Jewish exile into Babylon. The man Ezra had a very notable pedigree as he was a descendant of Hilkiah, the high priest who found a copy of the law in the days of King Josiah. This man Ezra was a very skillful scribe and had spent his time in captivity reading the Law of Moses and he would lead many of the Jews into experiencing a great revival. He is also attributed to being the writer of 1 and 2 Chronicles. It would benefit the reader to take some time to read the books of Haggai and Zechariah along with Ezra because they were his contemporaries during the rebuilding period.
Point to Ponder
Let us be clear in our understanding of the Jewish captivity, it was ordained by the Lord due to their departure from the word of God and for their desire for worshipping the gods of the heathen. On the other hand we see in the opening verses of Chapter one that Cyrus, the King of Persia, was prompted by God to send a delegation of Jews back to Israel to rebuild the temple. Rulers and Kings are powerless in the bigger scheme of life and they are rendered impotent when God desires to make things happen to fulfill his divine plan.
I - The Favorable Decree ''Restoration'' (Ezra 1)
II - The Fascinating Delegation ''Return'' (Ezra 2)
III - The Faithful Disciples ''Rebuild'' (Ezra 3)
Point to Ponder
The decree of Cyrus was announced and God stirred up the hearts of the chiefest men of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and the Levites. The movement had to begin with the leaders because they needed to go back to the homeland and get everything set up.
