James 1:12-18
Last week, we discovered some keys to understanding the trials we are going through. James wrote to the Christians who were experience some extreme circumstances, and some were thriving under them, some struggling, so he is bringing some teaching to them to help.
These believers loved Jesus but struggled to understand what was happening to them and how to handle these storms that rocked their lives. What does this mean? Who is God? Why is he letting this happen to us? What should we do? James writes to encourage them and show them how to walk out their Christian faith in the real world... James reminds them that Jesus said these trials are normal and with God there is a way not only to survive but win. They had something the world could not take away.... Christ presence and the family of God
So they began a great adventure of discovery; who they were in Christ and just how great their salvation was. Their challenge was our challenge - how do we live out the Jesus life in the real world?
They found that God uses trials to develop endurance, that brings maturity, completeness in their walk with the savior, so that they lack nothing! That is a great promise!
James 1:12 (HCSB)
12 Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
James says that if Christians meet the testings of life in the steadfast constancy which Christ can give, life becomes infinitely more splendid than ever it was before. The struggle is the way to glory, and the very struggle itself is a glory.
William Barclay, The Letters of James and Peter, 3rd ed. fully rev. and updated., The New Daily Study Bible (Louisville, KY; London: Westminster John Knox Press, 2003), 56.
