James 1:21-25
As we are approaching our text for this week, James has asked, “Does anyone lack wisdom?” As parents, we need wisdom! How do you handle the desire of your kids to have a significant other? (Just say NO!) Wisdom for job choice? (Not only about the $$$) Which car to buy (Whatever I buy, don’t) Marriage, school, family, you name it! Yes, I need wisdom.
I would venture to say that you need wisdom, too. Wisdom is what you need and God gives it generously… the word in Greek is HAPLOS. It means abundant, simple, pure, sound, whole. His giving isn’t reluctant, it’s generous. It isn’t from mixed motives, or with strings attached, it’s a pure expression of who he is.
James 1:5
5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.
Go deep enough in the Bible and you will hit this bedrock idea - God is good, and unvarying in his goodness. Throughout this letter, James points to the unvarying, unchanging oneness and goodness of God. Why is that important? Because there is no one else in your life or mine who is like that.
James, throughout the rest of his letter, appeals to the nature and character of God as the root of Christian character and behavior. If God is this way, then I should be, too. And so, through patient endurance we come to resemble the wholeness and consistency of God.
James is saying with God, things always line up. God’s love and holiness are sincere. What he does is coming from who he really is. Our goal is to be like God, who treats everyone with dignity, who is generous toward anyone in need, who speaks the truth to everyone, and who is the same yesterday, today and forever.
