Welcome to our continuing series from James, Walk It Out. Today, we are starting off quite abruptly, but stick with it to the end and I believe that Lord will meet us in a powerful way!

James 4:4-10 (CSB) 4 You adulterous people! Don't you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God. 5 Or do you think it's without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely? 6 But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:

God resists the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.

Contrast - friendship with the world and it's ways makes you an enemy with God. What's in you will be shown!

James, in speaking strongly here by comparing the church folks to adulterers is drawing attention to the relational context of their commitment to God, or their supposed commitment more specifically. Just prior to these verses, James is showing that quarrels and arguments arise from selfishness within, wars and struggles are centered on desires that are unmet, and so the individual attempts to fill the desire on their own terms. James, understandably, calls this into question, and then refers to those who do this as adulterers.

Adultery is to break covenant. Plain and simple. James sees this same issue at hand when it comes to how he views the covenant relationship between God and his people. So, he steps on toes again and makes the statement that friendship with the world is just like adultery. Hostility toward God. Ouch. Adultery is a destructive activity, one that is done on purpose, with intent. No one just absentmindedly steps into it. Neither, as James points out, is the journey of friendship with the world vs. relationship with God.
