We are close to finishing the book of James! This summer has seen us wrestle with some really tough subjects and spiritual challenges. I think that we have grown through this time to be a little more like Jesus! So, the challenges are worth it for sure. A quick review to get us up to speed today. For the previous 4 chapters, James has spoken to the church about the value of trials in a believers’ life. These trials can produce within us maturity that is desperately needed. We found out that there are significant differences between trials and temptations. Temptations attempt to trip us up - trials attempt to help us grow! James then hits a theme that weaves in and out of the rest of his letter - that of the necessity of the Word in our lives - it should inform us and be active within us for behavior and belief. Don’t just listen to it. Actually DO!

This imperative shows up in our love of others, not in the preference of one above another, not in showing favoritism. James speaks to the disparity between the rich and the poor in several places within his letter, each time laying a challenge to the reader to check your motives for the relationships you value.

For James, faith in Christ shows up in actions. The two cannot be separated. True religion, in his words, is caring for the widow and the orphan, action-oriented engagement with the needy and potentially marginalized.

James, always the practical one, then steps on our toes for a couple of chapters. He deals with the fire in our bodies called the tongue, giving some strong warnings about its ability to sidetrack us and drag us into situations that are unlooked for! If only we could get control of this thing!

Wisdom is what is needed, desperately in our lives! Then, more toe stepping by James as he reveals the heart of the one filled with pride and the remedy for pride, submitting oneself to God! As a ...
