Advent - HOPE (1 of 1)
Series: Advent
Rich Wooten
Luke 2:4-7
Thanksgiving is done. The hours spent dedicated to the preparation of the meal, the travel, the laughter, the tears (hopefully from laughter), the reconnections - all over way too quickly! If you are like our house, the turkey dinner part is done in 15 minutes! Ha! And that's going back for 2nd's!
And now we move to a new part of the calendar. We are quickly approaching the season that for many is a favorite time of the year - Cyber Monday - nope! Christmas. Just 4 more Sunday's and we arrive! A season of Hope, Peace, Joy, Love! Over the next 5 Sundays we will be discovering a bit more about Advent, its importance to us as a people of God, its importance to our world, and the ultimate reality of who God is in all of this - and our response to this reality.
Advent is all about the incarnation. And that incarnation is key to more fully understanding the story of the Bible. It is grounded in the four key words for the next weeks - Hope, Peace, Joy, Love. This week, we start with hope.
A good solid table is key for a successful Thanksgiving dinner. It supports the meal, makes possible the enjoyment to not be marred by unfortunate spillage! A table is actually a good starting point for us in the Advent season. It is what undergirds the whole theme - and for us, this is HOPE.
Hope. An expectation or belief in the fulfillment of something desired. Present hurts and uncertainty over what the future holds create the constant need for hope. Worldwide poverty, hunger, disease, and human potential to generate terror and destruction create a longing for something better.
Paul K. McAlister, ''Hope,'' Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, 1988), 996.
Longing for something better. Isn't this the condition we are in. And it is important to recognize this in us so that a season like Christmas that can be so easily hijacked by temporary hope rather than a lasting h ...
