Intro/Attention

Tonight, I continue our series through the OT prophecy of Nahum. It's a series I've entitled When Grace Runs Out. If you'll remember, Nineveh is famous because of the story of Jonah. And in that story, the people repent, from the least to the greatest. But not too much later, the people have once again embraced wickedness and rebellion. And this time, God's grace has reached its end. That's the scene we see here in this short prophecy. God has shown grace, but His grace does have limits. What happens when grace runs out? READ TEXT

*I once heard of an agnostic farmer who wrote to the editor of his local newspaper, who was a Christian. He said; ''In defiance of your God I plowed my fields this year on Sunday, I disked and fertilized them on Sunday, I planted them on a Sunday, I cultivated them on Sunday, and I reaped them on Sunday. This October I had the biggest crop I have ever had. How do you explain that?'' The editor replied: ''God does not always settle his accounts in October.''*

In the first section of his book Nahum has given a theological explanation of God's judgment as he has described the severity and goodness of God, and his dealings with the nations in general terms (Chapter 1). Now he focuses on a particular illustration of divine judgment-the destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the superpower Assyria in the seventh century bc (Chapter 2).

We see at least two consequences that occur when judgment time comes...

He rewards the righteous: 1-2

Explanation

Nahum 2 records, in powerful and poetic form, the destruction of Nineveh. God's patience has been tested. God's forgiveness has been wasted. And God's grace has run out.

But remember, even in the midst of judgment, God is merciful. The prophet prays in Habakkuk 3:2, ''In wrath, remember mercy...'' And this is the God who answers that prayer continually. Even in the midst o ...
