Jesus Is the New Exodus- Part Two (6 of 32)
Series: John
Patrick Edwards
John 6:35-71
Introduction
Last week we began exploring this one massive passage in John's Gospel where we saw Jesus feed over five thousand people with two fish and five loaves of bread. We then saw Jesus walk on water. Meanwhile, while performing these miraculous signs and wonders Jesus attempted to explain to both His disciples and the crowds what these signs meant and who He really was. Perhaps most significantly we saw all of this cast upon the backdrop of the Passover feast that was taking place.
In other words, we saw at length last week in the first half of John 6 how Jesus was showing the people that He is the true and better Exodus. Jesus was showing the people that He is not some prophet like Moses, but a true and better Moses. He is not some king like David, but a true and better David. In other words, Jesus was showing the people the real spiritual deliverance they needed and how He alone could provide it.
We pick up then this morning in the same scene, right where we left off last week. Jesus has told the people that He has the authority to save and to judge, that He alone can give life. He described this in terms of bread, calling Himself the bread of life. In other words, He comes into the world to do more than just feed the people in the wilderness; He comes to do more than just feed them lunch or dinner. He comes to give them life itself.
You see, Jesus is telling the people that He is the true exodus, who has come to deliver them from spiritual death and to grant them life. Friend, Jesus comes to save you. But how do we receive that gift? Right, this is the question that was posed in part by the people back in verse 28, ''[The people] said to him, 'What must we do?''' (John 6:28) What can we do to receive this gift? Jesus says to them, ''... believe in Him whom He has sent.'' (John 6:29b) In other words, believe that Jesus is who He says He is. Believe ...
