Josephine Knight and Earle Dickson were married in 1917. Earle went to work as a cotton buyer for the Johnson and Johnson Company. Josephine set up the house, birthed the children, and ran their home with the efficiency of a small business.

But Josephine Dickson was accident-prone. Homemaker's in the previous century were confronted with tasks that we seldom think about. Bread was baked and sliced; meat was tenderized and sliced; fruits, vegetables, and potatoes were peeled and sliced, and all of that slicing led to frequent cuts.

Food wasn't cooked with a microwave -- or even an oven. Josephine fed her family by cooking on a wood-burning stove, and that stove didn't come with all the modern safety features we enjoy today.

To make matters worse, Josephine couldn't bandage herself! The only tape at the time was three inches wide. Earle got cotton in bulk from his employer and he trimmed it down to fit. Almost every night Earle came home to another accident and he would patiently dress her wounds.

One night, Earle Dickson woke up with an idea. He found the tape and cut one-inch wide strips and laid them on the kitchen counter, sticky side up. Then he put one-inch square pieces of cotton in the middle of the each one, leaving sticky tape showing on both ends.

The next time Josephine suffered a burn or cut, she used one of the bandages her husband prepared for her. She washed the wound with soap, and applied one of her husbands' one-inch strips to her injury. It worked so well that her children suffered imaginary injuries so they could wear Mom's bandages - and she drew pictures on them for the children to enjoy.

That Christmas, Josephine mentioned her husband's idea at the company Christmas dinner. When Mr. Johnson heard the story he said, ''We ought to market that!'' In 1924, Johnson and Johnson added Band-Aids to their product line!

But they only sold $3,000 worth of Band-Ai ...
