HEARING BUT NOT LISTENING

There is a difference between hearing and listening. You hear with your hears, but you listen with your mind. If a student is daydreaming in class, he hears his teacher, but he's not actually listening to what his teacher is saying.

Psalm 19 says that there are two sources of information about God: creation and the Scriptures. They speak to us, but do we actually listen to what they say?

CREATION

''The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork'' (v. 1). Creation declares that God is glorious. In our galaxy alone, there are about 400 billion stars. And according to one recent estimate, there are at least 2 trillion galaxies. In Psalm 8, David writes, ''When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?'' (Ps. 8:3-4). In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul writes, ''[God's] invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made'' (1:20).
