I Can Do All Things (11)

Philippians 4:13
Christie and I have three children and all three of our girls ran cross country and track in high school. When we lived in Cincinnati, running was a hobby; when we moved to Indiana, running became a passion. If they were here this morning, they'd tell you that the difference was the coaching staff.
Dick Leming and Denny Walker coached cross country and track at Northfield High School in Wabash, Indiana for over 35 years. Northfield is a small, rural, 1A school between Wabash and Manchester just off of State Road 13. It's located just west of a train crossing called Speicherville.
Shortly after our move, our middle child joined the cross country team and went on a campout at Pokagon State Park. They left after Sunday evening youth activities and stayed up half the night talking around a campfire. At first light the coaches woke everybody up for a ''fresh run.'' Ashley had no clue on earth what that was so she asked, ''Do you mean we're jogging?''
Ashley said she got the staredown of her life from both coaches (the assistant coach was a deacon at my church). ''Don't ever use that word again!'' demanded Coach Leming. Then he smiled and said, ''At Northfield, we say fresh run. That j-word is considered a cuss word.''
My girls didn't know it at the time, but they were learning to retrain their minds by using a better vocabulary. They didn't jog - they ran. Coach Walker was called Coach Er (they weren't allowed to use the word ''walk''). At Northfield, running was not dreaded, it was embraced (the further you ran the better).
I want to talk with you today about our choice of words - and how we think about life. We're in a series called Life Verses. I'm using about 50 of your favorite verses and reducing them down into 36 themes.
Some of these Life Verses have been new to me, like ...
Isaiah 7:9 If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.
