Introduction


I think complacency is one of the most common places for human beings, even Christians, to find themselves in. Right? We like our routine; we like things being set and predictable. And this is true not just of our actions and schedules, but of our worldview and beliefs. Like, we all have our opinions and we're not very interested in changing those opinions. In fact, we can get downright hostile when we are set in our ways and then suddenly we are confronted with something different. We're like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, there. You know, hey man, what I've got going, what I believe, works for me. Just let me be.'

But if you haven't gotten the sense, yet, from John's gospel, Jesus doesn't just let us be. He doesn't leave your politics alone; He doesn't leave your church traditions alone; He doesn't leave your finances alone; He doesn't leave you work and hobbies alone; He doesn't leave your relationships alone; He doesn't leave your kids' extracurricular schedule and activities alone. Jesus doesn't just let us be. He confronts the old that we may be new. The real challenge for us, then, is do we really want to be made new? Like ask that of yourself: Do you really want to be made new? Completely and totally and wholly new. Not just some parts; not just made better. But can you admit that the old must die? Can you admit that there are habits, opinions, inclinations, desires within you that are not of the Kingdom of God but of the Kingdom of Man?

What we encounter this morning in John 5 is the confrontation between Jesus and the old ways of this life. Whether you are a follower of Jesus or not this is a passage that confronts your complacency; it's a passage that shines a light on where you are stuck in your ways.
