Expectation (1 of 6)
Series: Maximum Impact
Steve Jones
Matthew 25
Summary: Jesus' parable of the three servants entrusted with bags of silver illustrates that God expects all of us to live lives of maximum impact (influence). 1) Your life represents an investment from God. 2) God expects a return on investment. 3) God expects a huge return on a huge investment.
INTRODUCTION: You don't like to make New Year's resolutions, nobody does. The reason you don't like to make NY's resolutions is you don't keep them. Nobody does. At least, that's what they say. Who are ''they''? ''They'' are all the people you've been listening to that you shouldn't have. ''They'' are the same people who say:
1) You don't need to change, you're fine/perfect the way you are.
2) Diets don't work.
3) The gyms are full on January and empty by March.
4) Take it easy.
5) Don't work too hard.
6) It's not your fault.
7) It's not your job.
8) It's not possible.
9) It's not your responsibility.
10) It probably won't happen.
11) Nobody else bothers, why should you?
A resolution is a commitment and God expects you to make commitments. You can't get married without making a commitment. You can't get a job without making a commitment. You can't get a driver's license without making a commitment. You can't become a Christian without making a commitment. You can't join a local church without making a commitment. And you cannot improve without making a commitment. Your natural tendency is not toward improvement it's toward dissolution. It's the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Everything trends naturally toward disorder, not order. What happens when you ''let yourself go?'' You don't improve you implode.
New Year's is my favorite ''holiday'' because it is a time of recommitment to God and godly priorities. That's what it was for the Jesus. Did Jesus celebrate New Year's? Of course he did. Let me back up a minute. The Jewish calendar that Jesus followed was a lit ...
