Prayer (6 of 6)
Series: maximum Impact
Steve Jones
Luke 18
Sermon Summary: God expects us to live lives of ''maximum impact.'' In order to accomplish our BHAGS - ''Big Holy Audacious Goas'' we must harness the power of God through prayer.
Intro: Montezuma was the emperor of the Aztec state from 1502 to 1520 (from the Halls of Montezuma). The Aztecs were rich sophisticated and predatory. The empire included an estimated 5 million people. In 1519 a party of Spanish conquistadors coming from Cuba under the command of Hernando Cortes landed on the Mexican Gulf coast with 600 men, seventeen horses and ten artillery pieces. They advanced upon Montezuma's great capital city. Because he thought that Cortes was a reincarnated god, Montezuma made no move to stop them or bar their way when they reached the city. The Aztec army, waiting in the hills for the signal to attack, was never called. If they had been called, they could have annihilated the invaders. But this sovereign warlike people, outnumbering their captors a thousand to one, submitted to slavery. The conquerors stamped their rule upon Mexico for the next three hundred years.
So far, we have seen that God expects us to live lives of maximum impact. Secondly, a pragmatic and biblical way to do that is to set goals. Once we set our goals we take massive action to accomplish them and we do so in concert with a great church. We do not want to fall short of our maximum impact in life because we left our secret weapon, our most valuable player, waiting in the hills for the call that never came.
As we've said all along, we're not going to do this in our own strength. I've saved the relationship between prayer and maximum impact for last because I don't want us to think that prayer is ALL we have to do. Prayer is critical but it is no substitute for living on purpose and taking massive action. But the reverse is also true. We can't get where we're going without God and God's not coming along unless we a ...
