Series: Death Brings Life

Mark 8:22-38
INTRODUCTION: Mark 8.... Today, we are beginning a new teaching series... Life by Death (the title will make more sense as we go). But it is really just a continuation of our study through the gospel of Mark (fall).
- See... One of the best ways to understand Mark's gospel is to see it as two acts... Movements. Sections.
In Act 1: Which we studied in the fall, Mark (who wrote this gospel with the help of Peter) is showing his audience (us) the character of Jesus... ''Here is what Jesus is like!'' ''Here is what Jesus is capable of.''
- In this act, you see Jesus' compassion, concern for the broken, heart for the poor/downcast. We see his miracles... We see that he is capable of great things.
- We see that a lot of people are attracted to him.
- Who wouldn't be attracted to someone like this?
- And as we read the first half of this gospel, we see what Jesus is like... But we are left to wonder what it all means?
- You may remember, the disciples... When Jesus calmed a raging storm... they asked... ''Who is this man, that even the wind and the waves obey him?''
- There was a tinge of fear in their question.... ''If Jesus demands obedience from the weather, then what does he demand of us?''
- They see Jesus... But their vision of him is fuzzy... It isn't fully into focus yet.
In Act 2: Which we are beginning today, Mark is going to show us. A little more clearly, what it means to follow Jesus. To be obedient to him.
The gospel of Mark takes a sharp shift from being mainly a record of miracle accounts to a record of Jesus' teachings about what it means to live in his kingdom. To experience life.
- Jesus' teaching will not be what the disciples expected... Shocked and offended them.
- If we read this gospel honestly, it has the potential to shock and offend us as well.
- There is an upside-down nature to the way of Jesus.
