[33] And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, ''What were you discussing on the way?'' [34] But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. [35] And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, ''If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.'' [36] And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, [37] ''Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.''

INTRODUCTION
I like to ride bikes. Years ago, I use to ride in a lot of races... I was good... I liked to go fast... I liked to win... Pass people.
- But I haven't raced in a while... Kids, work... Adult life...
- But I have recently started looking at getting back into it...
- So I've been looking for races to train for/compete in.

I've discovered that there is a new trend... There are now races that reward the slowest person.
- There is a set distance... The person who can go that distance in the slowest possible time wins the race.... But the rule is, you must always be peddling. Always moving forward... Feet cannot touch the ground.

I imagine how silly this looks... And how counterintuitive it feels... Winning a bicycle race by peddling slower than everyone else.
- We are in a teaching series called ''Life by Death.'' We are exploring some of Jesus' teachings from the gospel of Mark.
- What we see is that Jesus makes all these upside-down statements...
- If you want to live you have to die.
- Today, he says, ''Want to be first, you must be last.''

What we see is that Jesus' ethic... Worldview... Way of life... Is completely backwards from the way that feels natural to us... Like peddling slow not fast.
- But Jesus teaches us that these paradoxical statements... Are ...
