Mark 10:17-31
INTRODUCTION: When we consider the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Most of us like to think of Jesus as very sweet, compassionate, sensitive... He is those things...
- But we rarely consider that Jesus would ever say anything that would offend us... Make us uncomfortable.
- After all, God is love... He would never upset us... Call our motives/way of life/desires into question.
- We like our Jesus to embrace, affirm, and encourage us. At all times. Never provoke us...
But in the Scriptures, particularly the Gospel of Mark, we see a very raw Jesus.
- One who is loving and compassionate... No doubt.
- But also one who is not shy about saying difficult things.
As we have been studying the last few chapters of the Gospel of Mark... We've seen Jesus utter some very difficult words.
- If you want to experience life, you must die to your selfish ambition.
- If you want to be first, you must last.
- If you want to be powerful, you must become a servant.
- See... Jesus is not particularly concerned with whether or not not he offends our sensibilities.
One author says, ''The hard sayings of Jesus are like hard candy.''
- Chocolate is sweet... it goes down smooth. Melts in your mouth. Easy to take in. Momentary pleasure.
- But hard candy, if you take it in too fast it can be painful.
- Break a tooth. You could choke.
- Jesus' sayings are like this. Sometimes they go down smooth... Sometimes they don't bring instant pleasure. If you take them in too fast, they can be disorienting. At times, very painful.
- But... Like hard candy. ''If you work on them, into them, through them... You are rewarded with layer after layer of increasing sweetness.''
- Maybe a better analogy is ''WarHeads.'' They were so sour... It was painful when you first put them into your mouth.
- But as you worked through the pain, they became delicious and sweet.
