ILLUS: You may have heard this, you might not have, but earlier this year (February 2015) Richmond County investigators discovered evidence of a rather substantial, local, counterfeiting problem. The Augusta Chronicle did a story on this back at the end of February and they told about one man who'd tried to pay for part of his $450 Georgia Power bill with $160 in counterfeit money and another man who tried to pay for his offender monitoring service with a stack of fake $20 bills. In an interview, Sgt. Shane McDaniel said that counterfeit bills are often found at bars, banks, restaurants, flea markets and gas stations - fast-paced businesses where workers don't normally take the extra time to check the cash. Sgt. McDaniel ended the article by saying, ''Money has a certain feel or texture, but when a clerk is in a hurry, it often goes unnoticed. When dealing with large bills, it's always best for employees to use a marker and see if there's a reaction.''

ILLUS: The other day while Kim was at home sick, I was in charge of watching after the kids. LK and Jack were upstairs when all of a sudden I heard a commotion and a conflict. They both came running downstairs and LK proceeded to tell me that she'd counted her money and she had $8.42 but Jack only had eight quarters. Jack was really upset because he didn't have any ''dollars.'' I told him it was alright and that if he didn't spend all of his money on Legos and candy, he'd have more ''dollars.'' Well, Jack disappeared, and a few minutes later he reappeared proudly holding up a piece of monopoly money and said, ''Now, I have a dollar.''
