Number 3- Numbers 17

Day 43 February 12 - Numbers 3 and 4

The Levites were bypassed in conducting the first census of the tribes but here they are numbered separately so they can be assigned specific duties. The breaking down and the setting up of the tabernacle would have been a major undertaking. It also had to be done decently and in order. God would not allow slothfulness or sloppiness in taking down the tabernacle or in setting it up. The Levites were given unto the high priest to help him assist him in his duties. The believer has been given unto the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our great high priest. The firstborn of every family was given unto the Lord, but that does not mean that every firstborn goes into the ministry.

Point to Ponder

The Levites were descendents of Levi one of the sons of Jacob, and he had three sons by the names of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The family of Gershon would encamp on the westward side of the tabernacle and they were in charge of the curtains, coverings, and the cords of the tabernacle. The family of Kohath was to encamp on the southward side and they were in charge of all of the articles of furniture in the tabernacle. The family of Merari would camp on the northward side and they cared for the boards, the bars, pillars, sockets, and the vessels of the tabernacle. The families of Moses and Aaron camped before the door of the tabernacle, on the eastward side.

Point to Ponder

The twelve tribes also had specific sides that they were to be located. The tribes of Judah, Issachar, and Zebulon were encamped on the east. The tribes of Dan, Ashur, and Naphthali were encamped on the north. Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin were encamped on the west and Reuben, Simeon, and Gad were located on the south.
